When British Judo were given a green light to resume contact training at the Centre of Excellence in Walsall, following strict Covid guidelines, I joined Smythe-Davis on her journey back to elite training.
In January 2021 with ongoing concussion, Smythe-Davis and British Judo announced her decision not to push forward towards the Tokyo Olympic Games. With the full support of British Judo and the elite performance squad, the emphasis is now on Smythe-Davis’ heath and recovery while realigning sights on Paris 2024. In March 2021, Nekoda and her partner announced the great news that she is expecting a baby this summer. I met up with Nekoda following her 20 week scan where she continued training and conditioning.
