From Silk Roads to Ski Resorts: A journey through Uzbekistan. Fresh snow over the Gūr-i Amīr Mausoleum in Samarkand. The Gūr-i Amīr is the mausoleum of the Asian conqueror Timur, also known as Tamerlane. Samarkand, meaning "Stone Fort" is one of the oldest populated cities in Central Asia, prospering from its location on the Silk Road between China and the Mediterranean.
