Liam Heath MBE is the reigning Olympic Champion and holds the world’s fastest time in the men’s K1 200m. In 2016, Heath became Team GB’s most successful Olympic canoeist following gold and silver medals druing the Rio Games, adding to the bronze he won in London 2012 with teammate Jon Schofield. Without a doubt, a stellar career in sprint canoe.
An early starter, Heath was introduced to kayaking during an activity-holiday at Wey Kayak Club at the age of 10. Interested in other sports, kayaking came quickly and naturally. Since those exploratory days, Heath has competed on the international circuit with multiply podiums in both K1 and K2 events, including three-times European Champions with Jon Schofield and winning silver and bronze medals at the World Championships and multiple medals in the World Cup series.
Following the birth of his first child in 2017, Heath decided to take a year out from competing in the individual event. By late 2018 he was back as strong as before with sights set on retaining his Olympic title. In 2019, unbeaten in every race he competed in, including two World Cup events, he went on to regain his K1 200m world title in 2019 to secure his place at Tokyo 2020, officially announced in October 2019.
A high achiever on the water, in 2017 Heath was also awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list for services to canoeing and awarded Honorary Doctorates by the University of Surrey, in 2017, and Loughborough University, in 2018.
